Here's why none of it worked: every piece of shelf decor ever made sits on the shelf or on the wall. So it needs an outlet you don't have, or a hole you're not allowed to drill.

A flat iron plate slides beneath the row. Your books press down on it. That's the whole fastener — no screws, no adhesive, nothing on the wall.
And because the arm reaches out over the spines, the light falls down the row. Your books get lit. Not the wall behind them.

Is it metal or plastic?
Panel, base plate and scroll arm are cut iron, matte antique finish. The lantern shade is moulded — that's what lets the light through.
Will it actually hold my books up?
Yes. The heavier the row sitting on the plate, the more firmly it's anchored. It's happiest with a proper row, not three paperbacks.
Is it bright enough to read by?
No. It's a decorative light — a warm pool across the spines, not a task lamp. Buy it for the mood.
How do I change the battery?
Small door on the underside of the lantern. Three LR41 cells, already fitted.
How big is it, really?
